I am the instigator of the excavation of Mexican painter Froylán Ojeda (1932-1991) whose significant career has been practically erased from contemporary discourse.

Froylán Ojeda’s personal archive, March 2025.

I have been working with oral biography, archival investigation and am the first researcher to work towards compiling a written biography of the artist’s life and œuvre. Within archives and libraries, I have often been the first to request and access materials relating to his work. My own response to the material and my use of intuition and speculation to guide my research has enabled a navigating of urgent oral testimonies and uncertainty. These mediums offer a way to restore humanity to a story reduced to silence by institutional processes.

An overview of his career: here

In March 2026, I was the inaugural resident of Umbral, the residency of Revolú Projekts. I was selected by by a jury of renowned historians: Margo Hobbs, published scholar and feminist art historian, previously head of the Art Department and Professor of Art History at Muhlenberg College and ex president of Women’s Caucus for Art; and Natalie Espino Director of Education and Programs in the Hispanic Society Museum and Library. Through self-directed research and with the assistance of Jennifer Lazcano, I continued compiling elements moving towards the development of the artist’s biography as well as a timeline of his work.

The search continues between this special artist and myself.

In 2025, I produced Froylán (dir. Ines Barquet & Ximena Prieto.) This film captured the way Froylán Ojeda is remembered by the people who knew him. It centres the directors’ interpretation of my research into Ojeda as an active site of memory and demonstrates archives as an ongoing source of inspiration. It was as an opening chapter of my efforts to disseminate information regarding this artist. [a project made possible by the Jonathan Ruffer Curatorial Research Grant/ART FUND]
